"My Money Is My Money": Diana Marua Explains Who Brings in What Between Her and Bahati

Nairobi: Content creator Diana Marua has opened up on how money works in her home with her husband, musician Bahati. She did it in a funny way, with a little help from her children. In a new YouTube video, her kids interviewed her about life as a creator. One question led to a frank talk about who earns, who spends and who pays for what.

It started as a joke. It did not stay one.

"Daddy goes out to look for money"

During the Q&A, one of her sons asked when she plans to stop making videos. Diana said she will stop when her children are grown and ready to move out. She explained that she makes videos to keep memories, not just to chase views. Then she pointed out that she has uploaded 1,133 videos.

That is when the family started teasing her. One child said her videos are only "jokes." The reasoning was simple. Daddy goes out to look for money. Mommy stays home and makes content. He asked why she does not go out and earn too.

Diana did not let it pass.

Her answer: I have my own money

She told the children that her content is work. It pays for her makeup, clothes and wigs, and it helps her cover family costs when Bahati is busy. She said she sometimes pays for school trips, and sometimes she buys the children sweets. That money, she stressed, is hers.

Then she made her view on marriage clear. She said it is a man's job to provide for his family, and she explained this to the boys in the room. In her words, a wife who also brings money home is doing something good and even godly, because she shares the load. But the main duty, she said, still belongs to the man.

She also drew a line on how the couple treats cash. Her own earnings are hers. Bahati's earnings are shared by the family. She told the children not to mix the two ideas up, and she joked that she will not tolerate confusion on this point.

Teasing the next generation

The talk ended with laughter. Diana warned her sons that they will one day have to share money with their wives, and one of them replied that he will never have a wife. She laughed and said the family would "cancel" that idea in Jesus' name.

What keeps her going

Money came up again when a child asked what keeps her going when she is burnt out. Diana said her children are the reason. They need food, clothes, school and weekend outings, and they would knock on her door if she stayed in bed. She said Bahati works the same way. He is tired too, and he could be home watching Netflix, but he keeps going because of the family.

The money side of content creation

Diana shared a few other points that explain how she earns:

  • She says she has been creating content for almost a decade. She says she started her YouTube channel in 2019, when she was pregnant with her son Majesty.
  • She holds two YouTube Play Buttons, silver and gold, and says she was the first Kenyan woman to reach one million subscribers.
  • She does not see herself as someone who just "makes content." She says she documents her life, and she puts it out there.
  • Editing and uploading, she said, take a lot of time, but they are not hard. She thinks AI may help with that in the future.
  • She says she stays honest on camera and shares her good days and her hard days, so viewers can relate.

She also had advice on haters. She said critics have followed her for years. She ignores the comments, because they are only opinions. She also said she has no envy for the lives of others, and told her children to clap for people when God blesses them.

A wedding question for Bahati

The family could not end the video without a little drama. One child asked when she and Bahati will have a wedding. Diana laughed and said Bahati has proposed to her five times. She asked him on camera when he will put a "rock" on her finger.

Fans are still waiting for the answer.
