Dee Mwango and husband Piotr Swaps Europe's Winter for Jamaica's Sun: "It Feels Like Home"

Nairobi: Kenyan travel vlogger Dee Mwango is soaking up the warmth of Jamaica, and she is not hiding how happy she is about it. After a cold, short stay in Amsterdam, she flew across the Atlantic with her Polish husband, Piotr, to land in Montego Bay. Her new YouTube vlog, which runs for more than an hour, follows the whole journey.

The mood of the video is clear from the moment she steps off the plane. She says she wants to cry. She says she wants to throw away her jacket.

Goodbye, cold Europe

The trip began in the Netherlands. Dee and Piotr spent only three days in Amsterdam, and winter was already setting in. It was freezing. She even admitted she should have worn thicker trousers for the walk to the bus.

She travelled light this time, with a single backpack. That meant no checking in luggage and no long queues. She went straight to boarding, which she says is one of her favourite things about travelling this way.

Still, getting to Schiphol Airport took work. A bus led to a train, and the train led to one of Europe's busiest airports. Inside, the walk to the gate felt endless. At one point a sign told her it would take up to nine minutes on foot. She laughed it off as free exercise, and she advised fans to arrive early so they do not end up running.

For her, the cold was the reason to leave. "Where the sun is, that's where I go," she said.

Touchdown in Montego Bay

The flight to Jamaica was long. Dinner came with a choice between chicken with potatoes and curry with rice. The captain told passengers the route would take them past Ireland, across the Atlantic and over Cuba.

Then came the landing. Dee had not been in Jamaica since 2024, and the feeling hit her hard. She said it felt like a dream, and that memories rushed back all at once. Locals at the airport welcomed her warmly, and some seemed to recognise her from her videos. She greeted her Jamaican fans with a cheerful "guess who is back."

Coconut water, rice and peas

Piotr stayed at the place they were renting to rest. He was not feeling fully well yet. So Dee set out alone to see the streets of Montego Bay.

Her first mission was simple. Coconut water. She hunted for it for a while, and she found it from a roadside seller. A big one cost her 600 Jamaican dollars, and she asked fans in the comments if that is a fair price. The smaller ones were 500.

Then came food. She ordered rice and peas with barbecue chicken at a small restaurant and paid 1,300 Jamaican dollars. The portion was so big that she could not finish it, so she carried the rest home.

Music on every corner

The streets were lively. Music poured out from nearly every corner, so loud that she had to move away to keep it from her recording. She also noticed police officers stationed around the town centre. A local told her they are there every day, and that things had changed since her last visit.

She stopped to chat with a friendly local who asked where she was from. When she said Kenya, he joked about it. She told him, with a laugh, that she is married.

She ended the day full and tired. Hair was next on her list. She wants to redo it, and she asked fans to suggest the best salons in Montego Bay. She also plans to visit Kingston later in the trip.
